Cutting Concrete Blocks or Pavers
There are various methods that can be used for cutting paving stones from chipping them with a hammer, using a grinder, and cutting through them with handheld saw. The most recommended method is to use concrete saws or angle grinders that use diamond blades. Diamond blades will give you a fast precise cut every time for a perfect fit.
Concrete saws are also popular because several models come with a built-in water hose that can help reduce harmful dust. If cutting several paver stones it is highly recommended that you use a saw to prevent inhalation of silica dust.
Safety Protection
The following protective equipment should be used when cutting paving stones:
- Protective eyewear
- Dust masks
- Hearing protection
- Steel toed shoes
Steps when using a concrete saw or angle grinder
- Use a standard 7 ½-inch blade with a standard circular saw and a 4.5-inch blade with an angle grinder. Again, it is highly recommended that you use a diamond blade. Stone related diamond blades should always be used on stone pavers.
- Clamp the paver in place so it does not move while cutting.
- Check that your safeguards are in place.
- Set angle grinder or blade to the recommended setting in the operating manual.
- Cut a groove on each side of the stone, adjusting the height of the grinder or saw, completing multiple passes until you cut through the concrete.
- Stop every 30 seconds to give the blade time to cool down.
- Once you have the grooves, move your paver to the edge of the surface the paver is on. Use one hand to secure the paving stone that will be cut off.
- Use a hammer or mallet to tap off the unwanted section.
Renting a Saw
Concrete saws and grinders can be expensive and are not ideal for every project. There are various companies that rent these types of saws, such as CanWest Equipment Rentals. This is often a popular choice for contractors that only need to cut a few stones for a few small projects.
