Helping Replace Calgary Water Pipes

A Team Effort to Replace The Pipe

The City of Calgary has engaged several of the region's leading construction companies to ensure the water pipe repairs are completed efficiently and safely. The City has also demonstrated strong coordination and oversite in managing multiple repair teams simultaneously.

Our team is working around the clock to help ensure new breaks in the pipe are cut out in a safe manner. Using hand saws with our Diamond Concrete Blades, our field team is safely lowered down to the pipe and they are carefully cutting out fractured sections of the reinforced concrete pipe for replacement.

A little history on the Calgary Pipe Breaks

The Calgary water main break that occurred in late December 2025 has once again exposed serious vulnerabilities in the city’s aging water infrastructure. A rupture in the Bearspaw South Feeder Main, one of Calgary’s most critical water supply lines, caused flooding, emergency water restrictions, and widespread disruption across multiple communities.

This incident follows a similar major failure in June 2024, raising concerns about long-term reliability, public safety, and the future of Calgary’s water system.

What Caused the Calgary Water Break?

The break occurred along the Bearspaw South Feeder Main, a high-capacity pipeline responsible for delivering approximately 60% of Calgary’s treated drinking water. The pipe, installed decades ago, has reached the end of its operational lifespan.

Despite inspections and previous repairs, city officials have acknowledged that additional breaks are likely until the entire line is replaced — a project expected to take up to two years.

Key contributing factors include:

  • Aging concrete pipe materials
  • Increased pressure demands
  • Temperature fluctuations and ground movement
  • Deferred infrastructure replacement

Why the Calgary Water Break Is a Bigger Problem

This event is not an isolated incident. It highlights a broader issue facing many Canadian cities: aging infrastructure colliding with modern demand.

Long-term concerns include:

  • Increased risk of future water main failures
  • Ongoing water restrictions during repairs
  • Rising infrastructure repair costs
  • Public trust and emergency preparedness

Calgary officials have stated that unexpected water disruptions may continue until permanent replacements are completed.

What Happens Next for Calgary’s Water System?

The City of Calgary is accelerating plans to:

  • Replace the Bearspaw South Feeder Main
  • Expand redundancy within the water supply network
  • Improve real-time monitoring and early warning systems

These upgrades are considered critical long-term investments to protect Calgary’s growing population and economy.

  • Conclusion: A Wake-Up Call for Calgary

The Calgary water main break dilemma serves as a clear warning. Reliable access to clean water — often taken for granted — depends on infrastructure that requires constant investment and forward planning.

Until repairs are complete, Calgarians are being asked to remain vigilant, conserve water, and prepare for potential disruptions. The situation underscores the importance of resilience, transparency, and proactive infrastructure renewal in a modern city.
