Locating Utilities Under Concrete

Ground Penetrating Radar has been around for several years. The technology is not perfect but each passing year new models of scanners are hitting the market. GSI and Hilti are well-known brands in the scanner market.

Scanning has become a requirement of most job sites to help prevent mistakes from being made.

Scanning can help to:

  • Maintain the structural integrity of your concrete
  • Help avoid costly repairs during your project
  • Reduces the risk of personal injury or risk
  • Help prevent damaging utilities, rebar, post tension cables, pipes and conduit
  • Measures slab thickness
  • Structure inspection
  • Void locations
  • 3D Data collection

GPR scanning technology is safer than the previous method of radiography (Xrays), which use radiation for concrete scanning. With GPR you will also be able to test through a depth of 18” and you only require access to one side of the structure you are scanning.

A great scanner costs upwards of $20,000 and is not on the shopping list for most contractors due to the large price tag. There are lots of options available for if you would not want to purchase one:

  • Hiring a Concrete Scanning Company. CanWest Concrete Cutting & Coring is the top coring company for Western Canada. They will charge an hourly rate.  Also, they can provide you with a free estimate for if you are in the process of bidding on a project. It is best to call and confirm prices as they can change often.
  • Renting a scanner. Some rental agencies are now starting to rent GPR scanners like CanWest’s other division CanWest Equipment Rentals starting from $275/day.
